About PLAY

In this landmark 10th issue, we explore the revolutionary potential of play as a tool for reimagining, a tactic for resisting, and a necessary release that enables us to keep up the relentless work of building new worlds.

Who this is for

Anyone who wants to publish a magazine, or some other editorial or creative project. Maybe it’s something you haven’t done before, or maybe you have but you’d like to do it in a more radical way, building in values-based modes of working. We hope that what we share can help you avoid some of the headaches and heartaches as you embark on trying to produce an alternative, independent, justice-focused mag or project.

What to expect

Building on Skin Deep’s 10 years’ experience in independent magazine production, and drawing on Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff’s editorial expertise as founder and former editor-in-chief of gal-dem, we’re sharing the learnings and reflections from our most recent publication.

Expect to hear about the highs and the lows: how a playshop kicked off the process, the realities and challenges of implementing radical frameworks, what we’re proudest of, our most common pitfalls and oversights (we did them so you don’t have to xoxo), and some radical transparency about money!

What not to expect

This is by no means a definitive guide. And it also isn’t a workshop that delves into some of the more practical elements of mag making (hey, InDesign). The focus will be more broadly on conceptualisation and frameworks that you can hopefully apply to a multitude of creative projects (although we’ll absolutely share a few practical mag-making tips & tricks we’ve learnt along the way).

Tickets are free but capacity is limited, so book now!

This event will be BSL interpreted and subtitled with closed captions.
